Windows 7 If you clone a boot drive without “Copy NT signature” what happens? Does that mean the new target drive will be a duplicate yet the old drive will remain the boot drive. If your intent is to make the target drive the new boot but you fail to COPY NT Signature, what steps do you do to make it the boot drive besides doing the whole clone all over again? If you don’t copy the Disk Signature , the cloned drive will be assigned a new one.

This can affect booting, drive letter assignments, etc. Windows won’t allow two drives to have the same signature. You have to decide what you want. Normally, you would remove the source drive and setup the new drive as the booting drive. I assume that DD will automatically fix the booting links in the BCD to adjust for a new signature if one is created.

I have not tested it, though. You can adjust any drive letter assignments using DD. You can always check them afterwards to check if they are correct. Authored on. Order Asc Desc. My guess is yes. Thanks in advance. If you are cloning your OS HDD to a new SSD drive, then providing you are not going to have both drives connected when booting into Windows, you should copy the disk signature. Note: not sure if you are referencing doing cloning using Disk Director here – this forum is for Acronis True Image but the principle remains the same regardless.

Thanks in advance for any assistance provided. Forum Moderator.

Posts: To do so, select the Copy NT signature check box. Otherwise, the OS will start from the first of the two, and the OS on the second disk will become unbootable. Leave the NT signature — keep the old target disk signature and update the operating system according to the signature. To do so, click to clear the Copy NT signature check box, if necessary. The Shut down the machine after the operation check box will be cleared automatically.

Click Commit , and then click Proceed in the Pending Operations window. Exiting the program without committing the operation will effectively cancel it. The topic was last revised: Friday, March 26, That is as I thought but wanted to be sure. I have been using TI for years and just bought the DD newest version. The DD email ad I received mentioned cloning as a feature.

When I created the bootable media TI showed up. Perfect as I am very used to that interface and it has worked very well for me.
